FROM THE DESK OF DEACON MIKE

Is the “Hail Mary” Biblical?
When the angel Gabriel was sent to Mary by the Father, he greeted her, “Hail, full of grace; the Lord is with you” (Luke 1:28). When Mary visited Elizabeth, Elizabeth exclaimed, “Of all women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of your womb” (Luke 1:41-42). So here we have the first part of the Hail Mary. St. Bernardine added the name of Jesus, clarifying who the fruit of her womb is.
The second part is in response to the first, asking Mary to pray for us and addressing her as the mother of God. Of course, Elizabeth addressed her in much the same way: “Why should I be honored with a visit from the mother of my Lord?” (Luke 1:43).

Altar Flowers and Plants - We have started to purchase some flowers for the altar and some parishioners ordered some green plants.  We will continue to tastefully decorate the altar and sanctuary of the church to make our worshipping experience more peaceful and prayerful.  Please talk to me before putting any flowers (Real or artificial) in the church.

Religious Vocations - As we continue to pray for more men to think about the priesthood, there is an interesting thing going on in Michigan.  The Dominican Sisters of Mary, which started 22 years ago with four sisters, now has over 140, nearly half of them are thirty years old or younger. Their primary apostolate is teaching.  Please continue to pray for vocations to the Priesthood, Religious life, and the Diaconate.

Our new Parish sign is in and will be installed within the next few weeks.

Our 11th Annual Car Wash Fundraiser held on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at the VFW Post 898 in Lackawanna was a huge success!  The youth and adults raised over $600. We washed about 37 cars, sold hot dog combos and received extra donations at each Mass.  Thank you to all who helped, donated, and supported our car wash. The winner of the 50/50 raffle was Evelyn Alvarado. Congrats!

A huge thank you to the VFW and its members for donating the hall, water, grill and parking lot to our youth each year! Holding our car wash there is always a great experience. Please support the VFW’s Bingo on Thursdays at 7:30pm.

All proceeds from the car wash will help our youth attending the Diocesan Youth Convention held in March 2020.  Our high schoolers usually attend this Catholic weekend event. Our younger children enjoy special events such as a Drum Circle or Balloon Brothers. Our next fundraiser, the Youth Halloween Party, will be held in October. Monthly group meetings will start again in September. Please check our church bulletin or Facebook page for future dates.

The Youth Advisers are so happy and appreciate our youth’s hard work! We are proud of our parish family.  We will be holding a Pool Party on August 10th to thank all these hard workers. Place take your invitation (yellow flyer) from back table in church.  May God bless our youth and all our parishioners! Again, THANK YOU!

WE COMMEND TO GOD’S CARE Paula Jiménez Alvira, sister of our parishioner Juan & Mary Alvira.  Paula died this past Monday in Puerto Rico.  Our thoughts and prayers for the family.

FROM THE DESK OF DEACON MIKE - Racism, Hatred, Bullying, and Bigotry have no place in a Christian society.  To support any of those ideas is against what we believe as Catholics. These are not political issues but Moral issues.  Here at St Anthony’s we have a multitude of different people from many different backgrounds, our ancestors have come from all over the world and we worship and work together in peace.  We do not always agree, but that is ok.  We work things out, not always getting what we want, but bending for the good of the parish.  Different political views are ok in society if we are looking at the common good of everyone.  Worshipping and living together and challenging one another to be better under our one God is the way Jesus meant for it to be.

Parish Picnic - Many thanks to all who blessed Dawn and my home with your presence last Sunday for the Parish Picnic.  Around 75 of us gathered together as a parish family. The pool was refreshing, the food outstanding, and the company was even better.  Let’s plan to make next year’s even better.

Pray for the Sick - If someone is in the hospital or is ill, please call the rectory or my cell phone at 515-8725 so we can pray for those in need.  We will keep information on the illness confidential but we are willing to pray and visit those who are sick.

FROM THE DESK OF DEACON MIKE - A very sad event in our parish last week was the passing of our Julie Rimo.  Julie did many things for many people and will truly be missed.  Julie set up the altar for the different seasons of the Church year as well as making many of the cloths that we use. She worked at every fundraiser and was very generous to the parish.  Please pray for her soul and for her sister Joann Snead and the rest of her family and friends as we all grieve for our sister in Christ.

Knock, Ireland
Dawn and I visited the apparition site of our Lady of Knock in Ireland a few weeks ago.  What a peaceful place in Northwest Ireland.  Our Mother Mary appeared to about 20 people from the village on a rainy night in August in 1879.  People from the age 6 to about 75 prayed the rosary in her presence for almost two hours that evening.  Ireland was in the midst of famines, persecution from England, the Free Masons, and some other radical Protestant groups who wanted Catholicism gone from Ireland.  This gave the Irish hope that a better future was in store for them.

This is a long form text area designed for your content that you can fill up with as many words as your heart desires. You can write articles, long mission statements, company policies, executive profiles, company awards/distinctions, office locations, shareholder reports, whitepapers, media mentions and other pieces of content that don’t fit into a shorter, more succinct space.

Articles – Good topics for articles include anything related to your company – recent changes to operations, the latest company softball game – or the industry you’re in. General business trends (think national and even international) are great article fodder, too.

Mission statements – You can tell a lot about a company by its mission statement. Don’t have one? Now might be a good time to create one and post it here. A good mission statement tells you what drives a company to do what it does.

Company policies – Are there company policies that are particularly important to your business? Perhaps your unlimited paternity/maternity leave policy has endeared you to employees across the company. This is a good place to talk about that.

Executive profiles – A company is only as strong as its executive leadership. This is a good place to show off who’s occupying the corner offices. Write a nice bio about each executive that includes what they do, how long they’ve been at it, and what got them to where they are.
